I wanted to become a College Adviser because I know that many students have important questions and are curious about college and what it takes to get there, and I would like to be the person to provide that information for them." |

Site Location: Meadowcreek High School Graduated: University of Georgia (Fall 2012) Degree: Human Development and Family Science “I want to be able to bridge the gap between the amount of students and lack of counselors within a school. As a high schooler, I only saw my CAP Counselor for a total of 10 minutes my senior year and had very little guidance throughout the entire college process. My main source of information was my friends, and we all know how "knowledgeable" high schoolers can be about everything. I see this opportunity as something that can lessen the chance of high school students having the same experience that I did. I would like to see improvements in the college-going culture as far as staff/faculty leadership involvement and support. My biggest goal of all is to end up with no leftover 'accepted' t-shirts." |

Site Location: Salem High School Graduated: University of Georgia (Spring 2013) Degree: Political Science "My interest in pursuing a career as a college adviser came from the proximity that advisers are able to work in a public school setting. Education and assisting students has always been a passion that I want to pursue as a career. Through the Advising Corps, I have the opportunity to work within a high school, mentor students on a unique level, and celebrate alongside students in their successes. This occupation also provides the opportunity to connect with administrators, teachers, colleagues, and many others to establish a strong network for future success.During the upcoming year, I hope to provide the students with 3 college campus visits and 3 college fairs. I also hope to raise the number of seniors who are accepted into at least one college to 150. This will be an increase over last year's totals." |

Going to Spelman was one of the best decisions that I've ever made, and It molded me into the woman that I am today. I wanted to be able to help students have that same experience of personal growth that I know only happens on a college campus. Supporting them along the college-going process and ensuring that they are at their best-fit college is vital to achieving that level of growth. I simply want to help students with that process." |

Within my first week, I am already overwhelmed and pleasantly surprised with the large amount of welcoming gestures and positive attitudes that I have received from students, parents, faculty, and staff members. I truly feel like I am serving a void that has been over looked for far too long. Now that I am here, I will be able to give guidance to students, assist parents, and the faculty and staff with the support they need when it comes to the college admissions and application process.” |

Many students who may not have the opportunity to attend college may come from a single-parent home, such as mine. Some of these students do not receive guidance regarding the importance of higher education in the home due to their parents’ heavy workloads in order to meet the family’s needs. I understand what they are experiencing. I know if they have a positive and energetic role model to help guide them, they can succeed. I will be that person." |

Previously being the Asst. Dir. Of Admissions and Recruitment for Morehouse College I was able to gain the expertise of recruiting and finding the perfect fit for students of color to pursue there dreams. My passion has always been assisting the youth to get to the next level and making there dreams an reality. Particular for the collegiate level, I've been a strong advocate to mentor and guide high school graduating seniors till there freshman year in college to the completion of there matriculation. Being an urban student from TCHS I knew how it felt to receive assistance from your counselors, teachers, and mentors to make my dream a reality. This had immediately cause my mind to gear on students who had similar background like myself and wanted to pursue post secondary education. By going through GCAC will allow me to bring my talents, perspective, expertise and story to the table which will ultimately allow me to make them successful in this journey." |

Secondly, I wanted to be a part of the leveling the playing field among under-served students and their peers, make sure they are allotted the same opportunities. Lastly, I wanted to help encourage students to view their adversity as a trophy not a barrier." |
